I love walking and being in the landscape. A number of these paintings resulted from extended stays on the Greek island of Naxos, which to me is a very special and much loved place.

Suffragette Tree: For Valour - Oil on canvas - framed

The painting shows the last standing tree of a group of over fifty trees planted in the garden of Eagle House in Batheaston by Suffragettes in the early part of the twentieth century.

Following imprisonment, hunger strikes and force-feeding the Suffragettes were invited to recuperate at Eagle House by the then owners, the Blathwayt family. During their stay, they were encouraged to plant trees to commemorate their imprisonment and bravery.

In the 1960’s all but one of these historic trees were cut down to make way for a housing estate. The sole survivor was the Austrian pine featured in the painting, planted by Suffragette Rose Lamartine Yates on 30th October 1909.
